FAQs

Psychotherapy refers to mental health treatment that involves non-invasive medical procedures. Psychotherapy is usually synonymous with talk-therapy as opposed to other interventions such as medication. In Colorado, psychotherapists are regulated by the Colorado Mental Health Practice Act. That act provides the below definition:
"Psychotherapy" means the treatment, diagnosis, testing, assessment, or counseling in a professional relationship to assist individuals or groups to alleviate mental disorders, understand unconscious or conscious motivation, resolve emotional, relationship, or attitudinal conflicts, or modify behaviors which interfere with effective emotional, social, or intellectual functioning. The answer to this question is unique to every individual, but you can guarantee that you will do a lot of talking. Once a treatment plan is developed, psychotherapy focuses on minimizes symptoms and uncovering underlying traumas and systemic issues. Clients who are being treated for anxiety could focus on coping skills related to reducing worry. Clients who are experiencing depression could work through grief with their therapist. No matter what you want to work on, talking about it usually helps.

People are often surprised to learn that in the U.S. social workers provide an upwards of 70% of all psychotherapy services. Social workers adhere to a similar code of ethics that counselors and psychologists do. Social workers tend to take into account a broader perspective than those only trained in psychology. Social Workers utilize theories that analyze not only the psychological content of an individuals suffering but also their ecological environment. Social workers are also better connected to community resources and can help clients find other resources outside of just psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy does not work unless the client is willing to work with their therapist. If you do not feel that you have anything to work on in therapy right now, then I would not recommend you begin therapy. Attending therapy is not a decision that one person can make for another person. If you feel that you need assistance in deciding if you are ready for therapy or not, schedule a consultation.
